Animal Control Officer-Leash Law

Dear Wentworth Residents, Property Owners and Visitors,

There seems to be some uncertainty regarding whether or not the Town of Wentworth has an Animal Control Officer, (ACO), or not, and whether there is an ordinance or law pertaining to dogs at large.

The Town of Wentworth does in fact have an ACO. He does take, handle and investigate calls for service and complaints. He also has the authority to issue warnings and summons for any violations.

The Town of Wentworth does not have a town ordinance regarding a leash law, BUT, we do enforce the New Hampshire state RSA concerning dogs at large and the regulations governing them.

For the purpose of clarification, please go to the Wentworth Town Web-Site and on the left hand side of the page, under the section Titled "Navigate", click on Town Clerk/Tax Collector, and then click on the section titled "Dog Licenses, Regulations and Penalties. This section will hopefully answer any questions you may have.

Also for the purpose of clarification, the Town of Wentworth does in fact enforce these violations, when and if a complaint is made, it is followed up on by the ACO. If you have a domestic animal complaint that needs to be addressed, please do not hesitate in contacting our dispatch center at, 787-6202, and an officer or the ACO will be contacted.

Also, just a friendly reminder, we are almost at that time again when your dog licenses will need to be renewed.

I hope that you find this helpful and as always I have an open door policy. If you need any further clarification, and or want or need to discuss any other issues or concerns, please feel free to stop by and see me.

Thank You,

Chief Wallace Trott
Wentworth Police Department
