Beware of Covid-19 Scams

Dear Wentworth Residents,

Federal and State agencies have seen an influx in COVID-19 scams. Some are fake organizations purporting to be reputable fund raisers attempting to solicit monies from people claiming to do so to assist first responders and or nurses or doctors.

Others state that they are trying to raise monies to help school children who are not sure where their next meal will be coming from, and others, are scams claiming to have access to an antidote or vaccine that has proven successful in other countries, but, has not yet been approved in the United States.

Please do not fall victim to these scams. They are run by criminals who are attempting to capitalize on the fears of people who may be unsure of the outcome of COVID-19, or, they attempt to appeal to the people who feel genuine compassion for the children and less fortunate who have been affected by COVID-19.

If you are not absolutely sure about the organization, or, the people contacting you, please, air on the side of caution and do not donate or contribute to them, and as always, please do not give out any personal private information.

As your Chief of Police I want to assure you that your department heads, your state agencies, and our federal partners, are working together collectively on your behalf. Please be safe, take care of one another, and as always, "Keep the Faith", we will navigate through this together.

Thank You,

Chief Wallace Trott

Warning From The New Hampshire Attorney Generals Office

Concord, NH – Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald urges people in New Hampshire to be on the alert for charitable giving and consumer product scams related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Scammers may take advantage of fears related to COVID-19 outbreak by selling bogus “treatment” and “prevention” products, establishing fake charities, and sending seemingly legitimate emails with malicious links or attachments.
Be Careful When Making Charitable Donations

·       Before making donations to support those who are ill or suffering financially because of the COVID-19 outbreak, do your homework:
·       If the appeal claims to be from a charity, make sure that it is registered with the Attorney General’s Charitable Trusts Unit. The list may be found here: https://www.doj.nh.gov/charitable-trusts/;
·       If the appeal is for an individual, think hard about donating unless you know the person needing help and that person’s circumstances;
·       Do not let anyone rush you into making a donation;
·       Check that you are dealing with a legitimate charity or individual and not an “imposter” with a deceptively similar name;
·       Do not assume that social media recommendations for donations are legitimate.

Beware of False Claims and Deceptive Marketing
·       Do not be tempted by claims and advice on social media and online websites that certain products or treatments can cure or prevent COVID-19.
·       There currently are no prescription or over-the-counter pills, vaccines, oils, lotions, or other products available to treat or cure COVID-19. Always check with your health care provider before buying such products.

Be on the Lookout for Phony CDC Emails

Be careful about opening emails claiming to be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or from others claiming to have information about COVID-19.  Clicking on links or attachments could cause a computer virus to infect your device.

COVID-19 HOTLINE

Dear Wentworth Residents and Business Owners,

I know that there has been a great deal of concern over the Coronavirus recently and justifiably so. It is important that you know your Department Heads, Town Government, and your First Responders are monitoring this situation carefully, and, that we are being updated almost on a daily basis by our state agencies who are also taking this matter very seriously.

In an attempt to assist you with any questions and or concerns that you may have I have posted the following information, which is a HOTLINE, that has been set up specifically for you by our New Hampshire state agencies and Governor Chris Sununu.

Please take the time to read the following.

For Immediate Release:
March 12, 2020
CONCORD, NH - Today, Governor Chris Sununu, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, and NH Homeland Security and Emergency Management, announced that 211NH has been mobilized to handle all COVID-19 related calls from New Hampshire residents. All residents with questions or concerns surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak can call 2-1-1.

“211NH will serve as a coordinated and streamlined process for any Granite Stater concerned about the coronavirus,” said Governor Chris Sununu. “Now that it is up and running, any New Hampshire residents can call with questions or concerns. I would like to thank the folks at Granite United Way and Public Health for working around the clock to stay on top of this evolving public health situation by making this critical resource available 24/7.”

"It is important during an outbreak that residents get the information they need to protect their health and the health of their community," said HHS Commissioner Lori Shibinette. "2-1-1 provides that resource for our residents to get the most up to date and accurate information about the presence of coronavirus in New Hampshire."

211NH is New Hampshire's statewide, comprehensive, information and referral service operated by Granite United Way and will replace the current Department of Public Health Hotline (603-271-4496) for COVID-19 related questions.

Members of the media and local city and town officials, as well as emergency management officials should still call the state’s Joint Information Center.

Please know that your Police Department, it's members, and our other community First Responders, have and are, taking the precautionary measures required in order to help fight and prevent further spread of this virus.

Respectfully,

Chief Wallace Trott
