Sure Sign of a Scam: Pay by Gift Card

Dear Wentworth Residents,

I have sent out cautions regarding scams such as these in the past and after having taken a recent report from a Wentworth resident who has been scammed out of  more than $1,150.00 I feel compelled to do so again.

Most of these scams are either phone related, or, social media related. One of the most common methods that they utilize, which is a huge indicator that they are not a legitimate business or organization, is when they ask that you send them monies via gifts cards, credit cards, or money orders, that you purchase at businesses such as Wal-Mart or Target. They will then ask that you tear off the back of the purchased card and give them the hidden numbers on the purchased card. They are at that time able to access those cards almost anywhere in the WORLD.

If you have not done business with these people in the past, or, have not run them through the Better Business Bureau (BBB) then please, do not fall victim to them. If you have doubts or concerns regarding someone you are dealing with, please, contact your police department and we will assist you in determining if they are in fact legitimate or not. Help us help you from becoming another victim.

Respectfully,

Chief Wallace Trott
